This video is of a mixture of powdered Iodine and powdered Aluminum. When a single drop of water is added to the mixture, water's oxidising properties are visible when the substances reach the right temperature and results in aluminum iodide. The purple smoke that is observed is Iodine.
Materials:- Bowl- Equal parts of powdered Iodine and powdered aluminum- Water and eyedropper.- Paper- Something to cover your area with ( metal).
Procedure:
1) Place powdered Iodine and powdered aluminum on to the center of a piece of paper.
2) Lift or fold paper in half and then in half the opposite way to mix iodine and aluminium evenly.
3) carefully pour aluminum iodide into a fire proof bowl.
4) Add a single drop of water with eyedropper.*Caution: this reaction works best outdoors as the gas is toxic and it is exothermic.
